Anulom vilom pranayam is alternate nostril breathing means breathing is done only through one nostril which is alternate.Anuloma is opposite of viloma. During this process right hand the thumb is used to close the right nostril and right hand ring finger is used to close left nostril.
Anulom vilom pranayam should be done on an empty stomach,preferably in the morning after evacuation.it can also be done in the evening with the gap of 4 hours after the last meal.
the main purpose of pranayam is to control breathing mechanism which is involuntary process.With regular practice of pranayama, this process can be brought into our conscious control to some extent.The duration of inhalation and expiration depends entirely on the capacity of the practitioner.
It is very helpful in respiratory related deceases like asthma.It is very effective to purify mind and body. Anulom Vilom pranayama is one of the excellent breathing exercises which is also know as Nadi Shodhana. Regular practice offers energy in the body and releases stress and anxiety.
How to do Anulom Vilom pranayam
Step by step
1.Sit on the floor or on mat.take comfortable sitting.padmasan pose (lotus pose) or crossed leg posture is most suited for the practice.close your eyes keep your spinal cord and head straight.keep hand on knee.Those who can't sit,they can sit on chair because this is related to the breath.
2.Close the right nostril with right thumb and breath in from your left nostril.Do this as slowly as you can, till your lungs are full.hold your breath now release the thumb and close the left nostril with our ring finger then breath out slowly through the right nostril.
3.Now breath in from your right nostril and close left nostril with ring finger hold for couple of second than release ring finger close your right nostril through right thumb do breath out from left nostril.Keep in mind that your breathing should be up to the lungs and not in the stomach.
4.As new Pranayama practitioners start with the ratio of 1:1:1 for breath in,hold breath and breath out respectively.With further progress, the ratio can be increased to 1:1:2, 1:2:2, 1:4:2, etc. The ratio of 1:4:2 is mentioned in most classic yoga texts. Those who practice advanced ratios of this pranayama, should eat only pure,nourishing and light foods.
5.Repeat this steps 5 to 25 minutes as much as you can.
Note :-
1.Do not increase the duration of inhalation and exhalation beyond your limit.
2.Those suffering from heart ailments or blood pressure problems they should do anulom vilom pranayam without holding breath before this also consult a doctor.
3.Avoid doing Anulom Vilom pranayama when the temperature is hot. Retention of breath can cause an increase in body temperature and should be done in a cool climate.
4.Pregnant women should practice Anulom Vilom but over straining should be avoided.
